Stucco Painting Cost

The average cost of painting strucco is $750 - $900.

How much does it cost to paint exterior stucco?

Stucco has a natural feel, but that doesn’t mean it has to look dingy. Updating old or worn stucco with a new coat of paint can make a huge difference to your home’s curb appeal. Painting stucco is different than painting wood siding and requires a special kind of acrylic paint. Although it is possible to do it yourself, hiring a professional is recommended. Stucco painting prices depend on the size, condition, and area of your home, but a home with a typical 1,000 square foot, single story floor plan typically costs $750-$900 to paint.

Cost breakdown

  • Materials: Paint prices ranges between $30-$50 per gallon. Most professional painters recommend using a primer 1 and two coats of paint on exterior stucco 2. The paint for this project will typically cost $300-$400 depending on brand, quality, and amount needed.
  • Supplies: Other materials include brushes, tape, sprayers, and scaffolding 3, as well as any caulking 4 or supplies to repair the stucco 2. The price for a complet set depending on the quality of the supplies will cost between $15-$25
  • Labor: The majority of your painting budget will go to labor costs. Most professional painters earn an average of $20-$35 per hour. Assuming this project may take approximately 20 hours, labor will cost something between $400-$500.

Enhancement and improvement costs

  • Stucco 2 is susceptible to cracking and water damage, and many painters offer a waterproof coating called elastomeric. It can increase your materials costs by 50% but could also prevent future damage and save you money in the long run.
  • There are varying degrees of stucco 2 texture, and certain types of stucco 2 tend to absorb and require much more paint. However, more textured stucco 2 can be harder to crack and damage. Painting is a good time to consider adding more grit or texture to your current stucco 2 treatment, which can add another $500 to your total.

Additional considerations and costs

  • Painting exterior stucco 2 doesn’t typically require a permit, but you’ll want to check with your contractors to be sure the requirements in your area.
  • Using multiple colors, even for small accent colors, can add an extra $200-$300 per 1000 square feet of surface area, depending on the number of colors and the area they cover.
  • Even if it is in good condition, stucco 2 that is dirty or covered in mildew will typically require an additional day or two to power wash, clean and prep, which will increase your labor costs based on the extra hours worked.
  • Homes built before 1978 may still have lead 5 paint on the siding. If this is the case, the painter will need to scrape and remove the paint. This job can be toxic, so it should only be done by a professional. If the stucco 2 is in good shape underneath the lead 5 paint, it is safe to leave it with a new coat of paint. This cann add an extra $8000-$15,000 per 1000 square feet of surface area.
  • In some cases it may be better to re-stucco a home than to paint it, especially if the stucco 2 is extremely damaged or cracked. Re-stuccoing is more expensive, but it could pay off in the long run. Consult your painter or a contractor before making the final decision.
